Welcome, I’m Joel O’Rourke. Thanks for dropping in.
I’ve created this blog to share some of my experiences with you.
I started skiing when I was 5 years old in the dreary snowfields of Australia and continued to do so on many a family holiday overseas. However, it wasn’t until 2005 that I truely became passionate about skiing when I discovered the joy, adventure and rewards of backcountry skiing.
Whilst at University in Australia completing a law degree, I participated in a study abroad to Montana State University, skiing the mountains of Big Sky and Bridger Bowl and all around the Gallatin National Forest for an entire season cemented a desire for more.
Upon graduating, I sold myself on completing another season in the states, just one I told myself, before coming home and working as a lawyer. Off to Park City, Utah I went and became a ski patroller. Throwing bombs and hucking cliffs at work and exploring the wasatch backcountry every day off – One season was never going to be enough.
Now, having worked many seasons as a ski patroller in Utah, British Columbia, Australia and New Zealand, I started a new chapter and worked as a ski guide in Japan, which has opened my eyes to the possibility of spending even more time in ‘my happy place’.
I am currently working towards being accepted into the NZMGA Ski Guide training program to further my skills and qualifications.
I hope that you enjoy my content and I look forward to my travels with you.
